Adam Gottbetter uses focus groups as a popular, widely accepted, and legitimate research method to determine attitudes, experiences, perceptions, and knowledge on a wide range of topics. On third section Adam Gottbetter discusses the discovery process for policy knowledge. The research ends with critical remarks on the use of focus groups for academic research and policy learning.
In this research, Adam Gottbetter considers the contemporary use of focus groups as a method of data collection within qualitative research settings. Adam Gottbetter draw upon his own experiences of using focus groups in educational and “community” user‐group environments in order to provide an overview of recent issues and debates surrounding the deployment of focus group methods and to pick out specific areas of contention in relation to both their epistemological and practical implications. Accordingly, this research reflects on some of the realities of “doing” focus groups whilst, at the same time, highlighting common problems and dilemmas which some researchers might encounter in their application. Also, in this paper Adam Gottbetter raises a number of related issues around which there appears to have been a lack of academic discussion on this matter.
