The Numberland Tales is a collection of stories in which Danny Starbright has a series of adventures in Numberland during the course of which he learns times tables. The learning of tables is subtly woven into the narrative in a way that makes them integral to the story, so that whilst enjoying a good yarn, children, whether readers or listeners, will simply enjoy the action.
The stories themselves progress in terms of reading difficulty and age appropriateness in order to coincide with tables learning age, although they can be used as a prelude to learning multiplication. The stories don't just teach the tables and principles of multiplication, but also their practical application in daily life.
In Ice Cream and Spiders, Danny is worried that he will fail the two times table test the next day, and is even more worried about his horrid teacher, Mr Grimshaw. But through his encounters with Cassandra a talking cat, a grumpy water boatman with ideas above his station, a horrid spider that has just eaten her husband and a lovely old witch who can produce ice creams from thin air, Danny discovers the principles and applications of multiplying by two.
In Cakes and Butterflies, Danny gets lost in an enchanted wood, stuffs his face with delicious cakes, and learns the Five Times Table. This story has lots of sillyness and funny bits so that children are learning without realising it.

The Tentown Adventure, is a story in which Danny encounters a Very Scary Queen, a pair of inept and foolish Royal Guards, bugs, bogies, and more that appeals to children. And he also learns the ten times table and a lot more about the principles of multiplication.

Four Twits a Dragon and a Princess - A great story about four silly and incompetent knights on a quest to rescue a princess from a fierce dragon, and steal some treasure while they are at it. Danny gets caught up in the adventure, but the knights are hopeless, and in the end it is Danny who rescues the princess, and works out a win-win solution to the quest so that nobody gets killed or stabbed, the princess goes home. And he learns the four times table.

Three Blarts and a Bogie - A great adventure in a crazy world of strange creatures called Blarts. Danny is befriended by the Blarts and attends their annual sports tournament. But it isn't like any sports day he has been to before … This story is full of the kind of craziness that appeals to children, and has the three times table woven into it, so that Danny learns the three times as part of the story, which enables him to escape a terrible (but rather silly) fate. Contains some wonderful disgusting bits and creative ideas, that will fascinate children, and encourage creative thinking.
