The purpose of this book is to present a modern synthesis of our knowledge of the intricacies of the biology of the mammalian egg during the preimplantation period. It concentrates particularly on the blastocyst, the final stage of development in the preimplantation period. This monograph covers the deliberations of an international symposium, The Biology of the Blastocyst, held at Lake Wilderness, the postgraduate training center of the Univeristy of Washington. Here amid the magnificent trees and mountains of the Northwest forty scientists discussed at length the biology of the blastocyst and groped for a better understanding of the complex embryo-endometrial interrelationships that lead finally to implantation.
