The first half of the twentieth century saw remarkable advances in the geophysical sciences: technical developments made various new types of bservation and measurement possible; a deepened understanding of the fundamental laws of nature gave the necessary basis for the interpretation of many of the complex phenomena concerned; and the practical importance of some of the fields greatly stimulated research This book has been compiled in response to widespread interest surround by the vast enterprise, its main purpose being to provided the educated public with a background of knowledge which will aid them in appreciating the significance of some of the work being done.
