While Patrick is still full of fond memories of his carefree childhood in an orchid plantation in Sembawang, his parents are determined to ride on the wave of Singapore’s meritocratic system to get him into the ranks of the elite. Patrick excels in his studies but socially, he is rather inept. His weakness in this area doesn't seem to matter until he falls in love with a girl from a poor, working class family. Deep down, he is still very much a kampung boy, but his parents’ ambition has forced him to shed his original identity, making him worlds apart from someone he loves.
