Description
This book is set in Ballinaskellig, known far and wide as Ulster's 'quietest village' because it has never had a 'major incident'. The village is full of characters and this is the hilarious story of a tense thirty-five days, when the Catholic priest, Father Patrick D'Arcey, disvovers through the Confessional that one of his flock is romancing a Protestant lad who is, in reality, her half-brother!
Despite never having spoken to each other for the past twenty years, the priest and his next-door neighbour: 'The Reverend Thomas Reid' are forced to work together to put a spoke in the wheel of this illicit affair between the shy Norbert and the beautiful Karen.
Of course neither Norbert nor Karen are aware that Norbert's father, the aging Lothario: Henry, had an affair with her widowed mother over twenty years ago and that she - the beautiful Karen - is the result! Henry is her genuine biological father!
Now, at twenty years of age, the two have fallen madly in love, despite the many dire warnings about mixed marriages. (No mention, of course, from bashful parents about them being related!)
Despite ever-stronger warnings and even threats from both parents of being thrown out of home, the romance continues to blossom, but the baloon really goes up when Karen's mother finds a note on her daughter's bedside table, informing her that she and Norbert have eloped to Scotland.
Now the two clergymen, and the old rake who caused all the trouble in the first place, together with his long suffering wife who has to be brought into the picture, really have to get moving to put a stop to this 'Incestuous Relationship'.
While this is all going on, Big Trevor, who owns the only pub in the village, together with some of his 'regulars', is involved in a running-battle with Sergeant Grimshaw, who has just arrived in the village as replacement to the affable and recently-retired Sergeant Stewart. Unfortunately, the new man is insisting on doing everything by the book - not something that Ballinaskellig is used to!
It's all going to end in tears - but whose?
