Living costs in the developed world continue to rise – our fuel bills continue upwards, food is becoming more expensive, pay raises seem to have become a thing of the past and college fees, health insurance costs and the price of everything else we need to live continues to spiral upwards.

It's no wonder that people often find themselves making cheap food choices that can compromise their health, or skipping on gym memberships as a way of saving money.

I left a well-paid job earlier this year to pursue the dream of a freelance writing career.

Health and fitness, however, has always been a high priority of mine so giving up a regular salary means creative thinking around the concepts of health and fitness. Certain choices, such as expensive supplements, gym memberships, personal trainers and even certain foods have to be re-evaluated and, for the most part, discarded.

Without regular money coming in, they fall into the category of luxury – a want rather than a need.

But health continues to be a priority for me – and I hope it is for you too. Health is a necessity so seeking out cheap and easy ways to keep fit and healthy was also a goal for me this year. I've tried many different things in the name of research for this book and I'm presenting them here. I hope you find them useful and that they help you in your own individual journey towards great health and fitness. It's not just for the wealthy – it's for you and me too!
