Description

‘This is an extraordinary children’s adventure story.’ - Anthony Coppin, ‘The Courier’

When three children learn that an ancient ruby-ring holds the power to time-travel, they can’t wait to try it out for themselves. Knowing they must be sensible and cautious for their first journey, they decide on a quiet period in the 18th century. How wrong they are!

Disaster strikes! The ring is stolen and they are trapped in the year 1715, just as an army of hostile Jacobites is marching through Lancashire, heading for London to overthrow King George.

As the terrified children search frantically for the ring, they are visited by the helpful ghost of a girl. Her mysterious, puzzling messages direct them to Mrs Perkins, a cook with the Jacobite rebels. A street urchin warns them about this cruel, heartless woman, but in desperation they are forced to ask her for work
.
As the invading rebels and their baggage train set off on the long winding road from Garstang to Preston, Mrs Perkins rides in her wagon, watching the starving children endure a painful journey on foot, dragging themselves for miles through the bitterly-cold wind, rain and mud.

Reaching Preston, the filthy and exhausted children are put to work preparing food for the rebel soldiers, while hopelessly trying to follow riddles and clues to the whereabouts of the ring. They mix with boisterous Jacobite soldiers and rebel leaders celebrating the success of their campaign, and they meet a secret agent in the King’s army, who involves them in his dangerous plans.

Suddenly, the festivities end. The rebels are shocked and angered by the news that a Government army is closing in on the town. Barricades are hurriedly erected, cannon are mounted to fire along the main streets, and rebel soldiers are positioned to pour murderous fire down onto the Government troops.

The Battle of Preston is about to begin, and the Jacobite Rebellion will reach its bloody climax in vicious fighting on the ancient streets.

The children don’t know it, but this will be the very last battle on English soil. And they’re caught in the middle of it!

Although this story is fiction, it is based closely on historical fact. Many of the characters in the book were real people, and the incredible events described actually did take place.

‘The Ring to Rebellion’ will be enjoyed by children aged around 9 or 10 and above. Also, because the story can be read on two levels, it appeals to older teenagers and adults alike (see ‘Reviews’ below).

‘The Ring to Rebellion’ is a self-contained story, but you can read how the children first discovered the secret of time-travel in Book 1, ‘The Ring of Tima’ (ASIN: B00D5ZRUXC). Age Level 6 to 11.
