Description

Tad viddhi praṇipātena pariprasnena sevaya
upadekṣyanti te jñānam jñāninah tattvadarśinah.
—With reverential salutations, approach the wise. Serve them and question them repeatedly. They will impart to you the saving Truth—says the Gita.
Transmission of spiritual truths by way of questions and answers is an ancient tradition. The Upanishads, the Epics, the Puranas, the Agamas, all have recourse to this. Great Acharyas like Sri Sankara adopt this method in their treatises. The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna and the conversations of the Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and other disciples of the Master like Swami Brahmananda and Swami Shivananda, present us luminous answers to the earnest doubts of aspirants.
Swami Tapasyananda, a Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, was President of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Madras during 1971-91. A profound scholar, deep thinker and prolific writer, he was a very diligent worker in the orchard of the Lord. He was never happier than when an individual approached him for the clarification of a spiritual doubt. There was nothing heavy or pontifical about his way of answering questions. He spoke freely and often with humour and laughter. He took enormous pains to discuss problems minutely and was particular that the explanations were lucid. He would avoid using too many Sanskrit words, because he was anxious not to give the false impression that the spiritual quest is an intricate science which can be understood only with a knowledge of Sanskrit terminology. Above all, he was concerned not so much in expounding theory as in pointing out the practical means of attaining excellence.
The answers he provided to the queries raised by devotees during the periodical spiritual retreats at the Madras Math have been taken down and published in the pages of the Vedanta Kesari from time to time under the caption ‘Pariprasna’. They have been much admired by Sadhakas in the East and the West.
In fact, devotees in Argentina have been so much impressed by the depth of thought evinced in these answers they have brought out an edition in Spanish titled ‘Preguntas y Respuestas’ [Spanish for ‘Pariprasna’].
May this Spiritual Quest bring the readers the realization that is the core of spirituality.
