An invaluable and unique information tool, it provides a wealth of practical knowledge for anyone – aid worker, soldier, journalist – who needs to understand Afghanistan as it enters the precarious post-2014 era. Your survival and ability to work in this country depends on it.

This new edition is dedicated to Alfredo Witschi-Cestari, former head of the United Nations for Afghanistan. It is edited by Edward Girardet (Killing the Cranes, Afghanistan: The Soviet War) and William Dowell (In the Shadow of the Dragon), experienced foreign correspondents and authors.

Purpose of the Essential Field Guides
For the moment, the Essential Field Guides team has focused on Afghanistan. We wish to continue this work, including making this information available in Dari and/or Pashto ensuring that Afghans on all levels benefit. We would like to do an abridged high school version with many photographs and maps. Overall, we wish to expand the EFG concept by compiling similar guides to other conflict, post-conflict or humanitarian crisis zones around the world. We can do this by working closely with local and regional journalists, but also experienced international reporters. It is vital, too, that we partner with other organizations, plus combine our publishing with the training of local and regional journalists as it is important to involve them for reporting purposes. We look forward to your support.
