The book reflects the development of Jung's thinking through the years on the nature of mental illness. Volume 5 was originally written in 1912 which marks his divergence form the psychoanalytical school of Freud. It became at the time Jung's most widely known and influential work. It is an extended commentary of a practical analysis of the stages of schizophrenia; furthermore it is a complex study of symbolic parallels, drawn form religion, mythology, ethnology, art, literature and psychiatry.
