Description

Every state has a licensing board for barbers and cosmetologists. Find your licensing board in the phonebook and ask them about local
schools or go to your local employment office to get these details.

Try the website "state.(two letter abbreviation of state).us" on the internet.

Although all states require cosmetologists to be licensed, the qualifications necessary to obtain a license vary.

Generally, a person must have graduated from a state-licensed cosmetology school, pass a physical examination and be at least 16 years
old.

After graduating from a cosmetology program, students take the state licensing examination. The examination consists of a written test and a
practical test in which applicants demonstrate their ability to perform the required services.

In some states, a separate examination is given for persons who want only a manicurist's license or a skin care license. Some states have
reciprocity agreements that allow a cosmetologist licensed in one state to work in another without reexamination.

For details on state licensing requirements and approved barber or cosmetology schools, contact the state board of barber examiners or
the state board of cosmetology in your state capital.

You will often work in a beauty salon for awhile then maybe start your own small business. Some people start a business without a retail storefront. They either do it out of a room in their homes or go to clients' homes and cut their hair there.

Some of it is sales. Selling cosmetics can bring in a lot of money.

Some cosmetologists have connections which enable them to work as make-artists on films and for TV.
