In Her Heart

A very young girl of thirteen is pulled towards the ship that will take her to America, to a new and better life. She stows away and almost falls prey to a very harsh crewman when he catches her, but a kind young stranger saves her by telling the crewman she is his little sister. This young stranger and his friend alternate giving up their food rations to keep her from starving. But they lose track of her after they land in Galveston, Texas. Freida is separated and quarantined. Just when her "brothers" think they are going to get her out, they are told she is already gone. Have they lost her forever? What will become of Freida now? How will she survive?
Three years later she is caught red handed stealing eggs from Joshua's mother's chicken house. She is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen and must figure out a way to help her, but what will his mother say?
