The American Revolution never happened, and New York City is part of a vast British Empire. Steam-powered coaches spew poisonous exhaust as they lumber down crowded streets. Odette has reason to regret her rebellious nature when she is unceremoniously fired from her position with the King George Ballet. It seems rejecting the powerful Earl of Westchester was a rather clumsy move for one so graceful.
    
To make matters worse, her genius twin brother, Odell, is acting more than usually cold and distant.
    
But Odell is not what he seems, and neither is her world. Odette is shocked to discover an unscrupulous fellowship has twisted reality to advance its own ambitions. She is not shocked to find the dangerous and disturbingly persistent Earl of Westchester at the helm of so loathsome a conspiracy.
    
In a last-ditch effort to reverse the effects of Odell's stolen technology, Odette travels back to mid-eighteenth-century London. With the villainous earl hard on her heels, she must stop the assassination of an important colonial diplomat and prevent the shadowy brotherhood from subverting history's march toward progress.
    
The fate of the world is laid upon Odette's slender shoulders, and she is left to ponder the age-old question all time-traveling heroes must answer: "What the hell did I get myself into?"
