Description
In this book Dr. A.I. Mlavsky tells his own personal story. Known universally as “Ed,” he has had a long and varied career, first in Britain as a scientist in training, then as a working scientist/engineer who contributed more than 50 articles to scientific journals and with over 24 patents to his name. After moving to the United States, he became manager of a laboratory and
later president of Tyco, and the prime mover in creating Mobil Tyco Solar Energy Corporation, the mission of which was to develop silicon solar cells for terrestrial use.
In a radical career change in 1979, he accepted an invitation to serve as executive director of the Israel-US Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation (BIRD), in Israel, the mission of which was to promote and support mutually beneficial activities in industrial research between US and Israeli companies. An initial two-year commitment eventually extended to 13 years. During this time he initiated over 300 joint projects covering a wide range of science-based industries in both countries. These projects resulted in billions of dollars in sales and many of the partnerships flourish to this day.
In 1992, by then settled in Israel, Ed became the founding partner of Gemini Israel Funds, essentially the first company in the full-fledged venture capital industry of today’s Israel.
In 1994, he received an honorary doctorate from Technion: Israel Institute of Technology, “In recognition of his exceptional contribution to Israel’s economy through the fostering of investments and projects in research and development which, as a result of his unique talents and devotion, have led to the creation of a great number of leading science-based industries throughout the land.”
Many of the U.S. companies which have made acquisitions of Israeli high-tech companies, and established R&D and manufacturing activities in Israel, had their first exposure to the country and its extraordinary talent pool through BIRD projects.
