Description

Five thousand years ago, due to offending a sage, the great Emperor Pariksit was cursed to die within seven days. Accepting it as divinely ordained, the emperor left his kingdom in Ancient India and went in search of a spiritual teacher. He wanted to know how he could meet death fearlessly and attain the best destination thereafter. Reaching a great assembly of sages on the banks of the River Ganges, the saintly king sat amongst them and placed his questions. As the sages pondered the matter, an effulgent and beautiful youth, no more than 16 years old, entered their assembly. This was the exalted Sukadeva, son of the sage Vyasadeva, the compiler of the Vedas. The sages could immediately understand that the boy was highly advanced in spiritual knowledge. They offered him the seat of esteem at the head of the assembly and Pariksit began to question him. And so began the unfolding of the Srimad Bhagavatam, the ‘beautiful story of the Personality of Godhead’. Framed within the conversation between Sukadeva and Pariksit are accounts of divine incarnations, saints, sages, gods, kings and emperors of ages gone by. The central theme running through all these narrations is a revelation of the Absolute Truth and our relation with it, both in this world and beyond.
Described as the "literary incarnation of God", Srimad Bhagavatam will elevate its sincere readers to pure spiritual consciousness. It describes the living being as an eternal part of the Supreme Spirit who is meant to enjoy unlimited spiritual bliss. We do not belong in this world, where birth, death, disease, old age, and a host of other miseries are always found. We are not meant to suffer and the Bhagavatam assures us that our misery will end when we properly apply the spiritual science expounded in its pages. It is the pursuit of pure transcendence, of another world where misery is unknown. A world where we experience ineffable bliss beyond anything achievable within this material sphere. Such is the nature of this profound text that merely by studying it attentively all the ignorance that keeps us in material existence is destroyed. Srimad Bhagavatam is a spiritual odyssey into the limitless world within us, the divine abode of the Supreme Person where we truly belong.
This is a rendering of the first nine cantos of twelve, said to be sufficient to take the reader to God realization, whereupon one is ready to dive into the all-blissful ocean of the final three cantos that deal exclusively with the divine pastimes of Krishna. These will be presented in a separate volume by the author in due course.
