Howie Flynn starts out his adult life like most others - broke. Lured in by stories of the lucrative oil rigs, Howie embarks on a journey to northern Alberta where he begins a career quite like no other. Far from home, Howie suddenly finds himself struggling to survive out in the middle of nowhere as a rookie on the rigs.

Based on journalistic research and interviews with oil rig workers, this fictionized story follows Howie’s journey as he adapts to life working under grueling conditions with a rough-and-tumble array of crew members. With derricks, drugs and danger lurking around every corner, Howie wonders, is it all worth it?
