Where should firms look when expanding, particularly when expanding into new countries or regions? should they look externally, at other firms, perhaps through mergers, acquisitions, or networks? Or Should they look internally, with growth through organic change? The answer to these questions, of course, is "it depends". In October, 2003 more than 150 international research and executives came to Pittsburgh to discuss these issues at the Carnegie Bosch Institute's 6th International Conference. This volume contains the research summaries from that conference. Analysis of these issues can come in many forms, from abstract modeling, to empirical analysis, to case descriptions, and all of these approaches are represented in this volume.
