Description

Cheaper to kill or heal?

Doug Nevin is an unemployed ex-cop who is unable to find work.

His inability to provide for his family has caused him to grown distant from his wife and his three kids. His son, a teenager, no longer sees Nevin as his hero and neither one of his twin daughters wants to play the role as Daddy’s girl. Even his wife is cold and distant as she struggles to pay the family bills on her own paycheck.

After repeated trips to the employment office, he finally accepts the only job he has been offered. As a Claims Adjuster, his duty is to help control the price of healthcare by eliminating those who his company has targeted as too costly.

As Nevin is introduced to his new line of work, he closes his first case completely by accident. He then moves on to his second case while hiding the new-found financial benefits from his wife. In his second case, he is successful despite an error in his logistical planning and research.

By the time the third case comes, Nevin has settled into a rhythm and begins to look at his task as nothing more than a job. Despite brief flirts with guilt, he is beginning to understand that he is providing a service to his victims and his employer while he, in turn, is providing security for his family.

As the cases continue, Nevin creatively kills the washed up home-town football, the flamboyant owner of a local pet store and a reclusive elderly woman who has filled her home with the memories of a lifetime.

As his innocence begins to fade, Nevin feels more compelled to include his wife in on the secret he has been harboring.

Unable to explain how he has been making money and paying the bills while working very little, he exposes his covert employment while on a romantic vacation in the gulf. It does not go well at all.

As a result of his own confession, however, Nevin’s wife has a confession of her own. That leads him to include her indiscretion in on his last case of the book which is probably his most creative and daring murder yet.

Nevin’s middle-age character is written as a portrait of many American parents who have faced their own struggle with finances, politics and healthcare.

The Claims Adjuster brings up a lot of questions that average, everyday citizens are afraid to ask about the rising costs of healthcare. Most of us simply believe that we are worth a million dollars in medical care. But, what if we aren't? What if our insurance company simply decided that they have spent enough on us?

What if there really is an office downtown with employees who monitor the self-worth of patients and determine that it would be cheaper to kill than to heal? What would be your "lifetime limit"?
