Description

Ellen Chance drove home in a VW van and with a 1968 University of Miami degree in journalism to begrudgingly take over her family's 125-years old small town Michigan weekly, the Towerville Times.
Looking like a hippy, she gave up a promising apprenticeship and a possible career as a TV newscaster in Miami. She knew she'd have had to change her image for TV, but now she probably had to do that to run the little newspaper. At least she thought so until she met a real hippy who happened to be the advertising and layout expert at the little paper. Dutch had real prize winning photographic experience from Viet Nam under his belt. He rode a Harley, and he came directly from the Detroit Riots where he had been living on Plum Street, a wannabe downtown art colony. Who could guess that under all that hair, he was a traditionalist? Or that their love life would take the first murderous turn before the first night at the motel on their honeymoon? It seems they spend more time in police stations signing statements then they do in bed. Trouble follows him from Detroit, when old acquaintances show up and attempt to get Dutch interested in going to Chicago for the Yippy demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The culmination of the entire horrible year is brought home when Dutch rescues one friend from a Chicago hospital after he was being beaten to a pulp by police. Another friend is found dead at the back door of Towerville Times after she takes time to break in and leave a package, instead of stealing one. Love will find a way, but noone said it would be easy.
