EXCERPT:

“Well, that date was pretty royally screwed,” he said crisply. “You at least owe me the chance to take you to dinner somewhere.”

There was that commanding tone again. He did it well. Three women at a nearby table were shifting in their seats just from the deep rumble of his voice.

“I owe you?” I said. “Get over yourself, mister.”

“Okay, okay.” And he waved to Ken. “I want another bottle of your finest champagne for this charming waitress. Here, I’ll pay cash.” He fished two hundred-dollar bills out of his wallet and handed them to me.

I tried not to take them, but he pressed them into my hand. As the tips of his fingers touched my skin, an electrical charge flashed through me like a thousand flashbulbs bursting. The crack was obviously inaudible to the diners, but to me it was deafening.

His eyes blazed into mine for a moment and he pressed his lips together. He was about to say something, but thought better of it and then he turned to leave…
