It is said that Olsen’s husband Jack found out the chapters, notes, and scraps of her writings among her old papers. She worked hard for two years and pieced the novel together in 1974.

The narration of the novel seems to be occasionally uneven only because it had been rearranged. She said that she was not ready to write new portions. The narration given in the novel comes from both young Olsen and an older Tillie Olsen.
