It is April 2009 and the Pope is dying. Superintendent Bruno Forster of Cotford police is on holiday trapped in a bad marriage with Tina [his 4th?/5th wife?] and her sinister friends.
Bruno wistfully remembers the Pope's accession and a promise he made in 1978 to Mary the great love of his life, to meet her again in Rome after the death of the Pope.
In Cotford Police Station an impromptu and unauthorised party comes to an abrupt end when news comes through that Bruno's house in Spain has burnt down and a body inside is believed to be the Superintendent.
During the subsequent investigation Bruno's grieving colleagues uncover some very dark secrets from the lives of both suspects and victims. The enquiry is disrupted by the incompetence of the Spanish police, Bruno's decidedly colourful past and the the multiplicity of motives and shifting identities of the suspects. Not even the dead are who they claim to be. It becomes a race against time for Bruno's old colleague Inspector Marsh to find an increasingly violent and elusive killer before he strikes again.
Meanwhile an unsuspecting Mary innocently travels to Rome to keep their tryst as a memorial to Bruno.
