In this Tour de Force, part historical thriller, part western action, from Kindle best seller Mike Pettit, author of the Jack Marsh Key West Series and a dozen other best-selling action thrillers, comes Yankee Gold.
Yankee Gold is the tale of a post-Civil War chase through the defeated South, across war-torn Alabama, burned Mississippi, and a reeling Louisiana, and finally into a defiant Texas for a climactic shootout where the hunted becomes the hunter.
Travis Ford, a beaten and tortured Confederate soldier is condemned to hang for war crimes against the Union Army. As a dispatch rider for President Jeff Davis, and an occasional spy for the leader of the Confederate forces, he is captured, lashed, and condemned to die. A daring escape with a strongbox filled with gold, has Ford running for his life with Union soldiers on his trail at every turn. Sgt. Lyle Burdee, a cruel authoritarian that swore to bring Ford back, leads the Yankee patrol. It did not matter to him if Ford lived or died; his orders were clear: "Get Ford, and bring back the gold."
The old South is dead, burned, and in ruins, families shattered, and tens of thousands of dead and maimed who will never return home. The new South is swamped with desperate men, gangs of freed slaves not knowing where to go or what to do. Hordes of greedy carpetbaggers from the North descend on the South like a plague of locusts devouring everything in their path, changing a once-proud people into subordinate victims.
Yankee Gold paints a vibrant picture of a vanquished people in a time when the entire country was left reeling from a long and bloody war. Travis Ford is a quiet soft-spoken man that just wants to return home to his family and farm. When he arrives, he finds his wife dead, his daughter kidnapped, and his farm destroyed.
