We use a fixed protocol with limited strategies:
- we only learn 36 basic facts.
- always place the smallest number in front (so 7 x 4 becomes 4 x 7).
- use the halve/double strategy when the first number is even (4 x 7 = 28 because 2 x 7 = 14 and 28 is double of 14).
- use one less/one time more strategy when first number is odd (3 x 7 = 21 because 2 x 7 = 14 and 21 is one group more than 14).
Using ONE main strategy gives children more grip to learn the times tables smoothly!
