Mary was practically raised by her best friend’s parents, the Adams. When Mrs. Adams admits to having an affair, the resulting divorce and abandonment of Mary's best friend, who blames him for everything, leaves Mr. Adams a lonely, heartbroken man.

Afraid of him being all alone, Mary goes by often to check on Mr. Adams, bringing him food and keeping him company.
