A short excerpt from the book: "TYPES OF TEETH -
Based on the replacement of teeth in lifetime, the following 3 types occur in mammals:
Polyphyodont dentition involves replacement of teeth from time to time several times in lifetime so that jaws are never left without teeth. It occurs in animals having weak acrodont attachment of teeth with the jaw bone as in fish and Amphibia. Sharks generally lose several teeth while giving a deadly bite to the hapless prey but all teeth are quickly replaced by new ones, which are already growing on the posterior side of the jaw.

Diphyodont dentition is a characteristic of mammals in which a set of milk teeth appears in the young ones but as they grow and jaw becomes larger, milk teeth are replaced by the larger permanent ones, which last a life time but if lost are not replaced.

Monophyodont teeth appear only once in lifetime and if they fall they are never again replaced by new ones. Toothless mammals such as baleen whales, moles, sirenians and duckbilled platypus grow teeth in the early stages but lose them later, while many marsupials retain milk teeth all their lives and find no reason to grow permanent ones."

The book has been written and the diagrams drawn by entomologist, Dr. Girish Chandra.
