📖 Description
My Road To Recovery from Alcohol-abuse
On March 15th 2000 I received my first DUI. At this of my life I really didn't feel as though I had a problem with alcohol much less alcohol-abuse. Rather I simply saw my DUI as an act of shame for being caught driving while intoxicated. After my court appearance, my probation included losing my license, paying some hefty court fines (most of which I borrowed the money from family members to pay as I spent most of my money on alcohol), not to mention the community service. I was even forced to install a system in my car which required me to take a Breathalyzer test before the car would start. For nine months I wasn't able to take one sip of alcohol.
Can you imagine what that must have been like?
But, as soon as the probation was over I ditched that old car and Breathalyzer and was back into the same old self-defeating mode and alcohol-abuse.
One Friday night I was leaving my favorite watering hole when I saw the red and blue lights of a police car in my rear view mirror. My first thought to myself was.â€should I run?†Petrified and confused I pulled over and waited for the officer to approach my door. “Good night sir, I noticed that you failed to stop at the stop sign. Is everything ok?†I just looked at him dazed and confused not even knowing that to say. “I'm sorry sir I didn't notice the si..ag.†I couldn't even pronounce a word as simple as “signâ€.
“Would you mind stepping out of the carâ€. That's it; it was all over. The only thing I remember after being arrested was being asked if I wanted to go to jail or to detox. I took the option of detox and was taken to the Terapia 2007 Medical center in Varna City.
I can't tell how anyone has ever felt when they've gotten a DUI but sitting there in detox gave me a sense of peace. It was as if there was still a part of me which recognized that I needed help and that part saw this situation at the best thing for me.
My time spent in Terapia 2007 allowed me to regain my confidence and self worth. Over the next few years that followed I began taking the necessary steps to repair the damaged relationships I had long neglected during my years of alcohol-abuse. Today I am sober, stronger, healthier and more alive than I have been in a long time.
It was only after my second DUI that I truly started living my life and come December next month I am looking to celebrating three years of sobriety.
