That night, I decided to cook our own supper. I figured that might take my mind off of things, so I gave the maid the night off. As I was boiling the soup and chopping up the vegetables, I saw Carl walk into the kitchen. He nodded, “Ma’am…†he started.
“Please, call me Hannah,†I replied, smiling.
He smiled back at me. “Mind if I wash up in the sink?â€
I held back, letting him through. “Not at all.†I continued preparing the food.
“It smells amazing in here.†He replied, showering me with the compliment.
“Why thank you, I…†before I could finish the sentence, I heard the door open and saw Jonathan standing there. “Welcome home!†I replied, putting on the best face that I could.
His eyes went to Carl, then me, and then the pot of soup. “What’s going on?â€
“I gave Stella the night off and I am preparing supper.†I responded, proudly.
However, it wasn’t a look of happiness on his face. “You did what?â€
I repeated the fact that Stella would be having the evening to herself. “I figured that we could have the evening to ourselves.â€
I saw that Carl was looking at Jonathan, but didn’t dare say a word. “YOU had no right giving MY staff the evening off.†He threw his hand down on the counter. “Understand?â€
“Excuse me,†Carl mumbled, leaving us alone.
“Yes, I...I’m sorry. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.†I tried to apologize.
He shook his head, storming out of the kitchen. I turned back to the stove and turned off the food. As I sat down in the chair, I could feel my tears taking over. I didn’t want to live this way. I started sobbing, but then heard the kitchen door opening again. I quickly wiped away my tears with my apron and looked up to find Carl.
“I forgot my…†his voice drifted off as he cocked an eyebrow. “You alright?â€
