It was the Roaring Twenties, and bullets and bootlegging were the order of the day, every day. It was the time when bootleggers, or rum-runners, as they are sometimes called, made their fortunes.

In "Prohibition Bootleggers and Labor Union Racketeers” we cover two of the biggest illegal bootleggers of their time: Big Bill Dwyer, and Joseph Kennedy - yes the same Joseph Kennedy who was the father of United States President John F. Kennedy. It's safe to say if it weren't for the bootlegging business the Kennedy Dynasty, which is still operational today, would have never been conceived.

When Prohibition was finally repealed on December 5 1933, gangsters, flush with Prohibition cash, segued into the labor racketeering business. Two of the biggest operators are featured in this book: Joseph P. Ryan - the President of the International Longshoremen Association (ILA) and master union racketeer Johnny "Dio" Dioguardi, who controlled several unions through fear and intimidation. Those unions included the New York City Garment Center’s manufacturers and truckers unions, and later on the butchers unions, by which Dio controlled the prices of Kosher meats throughout the country. Dio even stuck his sticky fingers into the bagel business.
