Description
Rachel awoke to find herself stripped down to nothing but her satin white bra and cotton panties, bound by a rope at the wrists behind her back and criss-crossed across her chest between her breasts to a straight-backed wooden kitchen chair.
Chuck held up a digital camera and a Taser. "Smile," he teased cutely, and triggered the snapping Taser at her. "Or else!"
She suddenly realized she was in extreme danger of a unique peril no Singleton -no non-Multiple- need fear.
Schism!
Behind her, the glistening white yacht continued to plunge with an awful sense of doom and finality into the murky depths. Rachel's chain mail shone with a soft bluish luster in the slanting rays of the sun through the shimmering sea water. Her dark blue color scheme was a perfect disguise, blending naturally into the colors of the sea...
The water was breathtakingly translucent, and Rich was able to see where he was going with marvelous clarity, as he brought the mini-Nautilus around until she was aimed directly at the broad flank of the big tuna fisher.
He shoved the throttle forward to the max.
The one-man Nautilus went racing through the water with a powerful whir of its electric motor.
Bullets began zinging into the water all around him and pinging off the tough iron hull and bulletproof glass of the mini-Nautilus as the distance to her wallowing target diminished steadily to zero.
Wham!
Her pointed nose pranged into the side of the biggest fishing boat just below the water line and punctured her soft steel hull.
Rich banged his forehead on an inner projection with the force of the impact.
"Ten points, you bastards!" he howled...
Finally when they were almost upon her, she drew the legendary blade and held it straight up and down in front of her. Watching motionlessly through her diving goggles, she continued turning her head this way and that, the fringes of her dark hair streaming from beneath the mantle of her cowling.
This is too much. I can't face them all!
Fuyuko! Please help me!
In a blink of an eye, Rachel suddenly blacked out and Fuyuko -'Child of Winter'- took over.
Fuyuko didn't just fight with greater skill, she could slow her heartbeat and economize her motions with both her voluntary and involuntary skeletal muscles and hold her breath up to twice as long as Rachel.
During this time, the swarm of attackers were crowding closer and closer around Fuyuko while remaining just out of range, constantly surfacing for air and diving down again to watch for an opening, as the closest pirates brandished their machetes and knives with ugly scowls. Their numbers continued to mount as they surrounded her in a gradually tightening wall of human bodies on all sides...
"Gentlemen, need I remind you all," the tall, immaculate, and genteel Captain Marc Dupere, the heavy-set, bearded Master of the Nautilus, was speaking in a distinctly French accent, "that our original mission has been scrubbed. Our new mission is to patrol the last known map coordinates of the Virtual Snowflake's emergency distress signal beacon, and find the missing girl and her father, Rachel and Richard Wrothic, and any other survivors, with all other considerations being secondary."
"There was some kind of a report of a young girl known as the 'Samurai Mermaid'," said Captain Dupere, "who appeared out of nowhere and routed the pirate attack single-handedly using a Japanese katana, and then disappeared again afterward as mysteriously as she had first appeared. Perhaps she rescued the girl. But the story is so outlandish that it seems best to put it down to superstition and rumor-mongering. Anyway, nobody seems to know a thing about her. But we must not give in to despair; there yet remains every hope of finding the missing daughter..."
"Beware, Rachel," whispered Tran. "You are no match for the likes of Mata Jahat!"
