Description
Today, if a pilot standing on the bridge of a vessel, asks the captain: “Please switch this radar in the ‘true motion’â€, then the OOW (Officer on Watch) will switch over the ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aids) proposed to the pilot, from the ‘relative vector’ mode to the ‘true vector’ mode, at the same time the display mode of the radar will remain in the ‘Relative-motion Presentation’. This means that according to pilot’s request the radar has switched to the ‘true motion’ but according to the traditional notion it is still remains in the ‘relative motion’. Many navigators do not even realize this misinterpretation. Why, in practice, there is such a word game and the difference in the concepts, which is not mentioned in any marine guidance publication or textbook of the marine navigation? In this book, using practical examples based on the real photos of ARPA display during actual maneuvering, I will try to elucidate what the concept ‘Relative vs True’ means for modern marine navigators and how it affects the safety of navigation. The region magnification features of the fixed layout format will make it very illustrative.
