Description

Welcome to "Middle Earth: The Secret History."

Middle Earth! - the very name is evocative of a time beyond memory, when a super-continent dominated the Earth. A mythical time of Men and Ælves, pucan or goblins and Dæmons, when Heroes and Heroines bestrode the land, and battled for supremacy with evil forces; sometimes winning a temporary victory, sometimes winning a Pyrrhic victory, and sometimes losing utterly. It was in this landscape that a young Hero, Ædwe, arose and challenged the Evil rooted in the North. In the various volumes in the series, we follow his childhood, youth and adulthood, as he progresses from obscurity to the climactic ending of the tale. Judge for yourself whether he succeeded or failed...

In Volume Eleven, the present volume, Ædwe returns to the West after sojourning for many years in the East, to retrieve a weapon of great potency, to use against The Enemy, Dunfiendsceatha . During his stay in the City of the King of the Ælves, he encounters difficulties, but he is aided by those who recognise his fate.

In Volume One, "Pandæmonium" the first of fourteen, Ædwe grows up in Pandæmonium, the abode of The Enemy, Dunfiendsceatha - the "Dark-fiend-enemy". As a boy, he explores the warrens, as they are called, and discovers a secret of The Enemy; The Chamber of Strategies. Meanwhile, he does what he can to disrupt the logistical system of Dunfiendsceatha. He gradually comes to realise the importance of what he has seen in the Chamber of Strategies, and eventually decides to escape from the warrens, to the outside world; he then travels south to the Kingdom of Albion.

In Volume Two, "The Village", Ædwe walks South to The Village, in the Kingdom of Albion, where he stays for a few seasons, learning the ways of the people. He befriends various villagers, and meets the mysterious Æthelthryth, but remains apart from them all, before moving on; but unbeknownst to him, his stay will have major repercussions for the future.

In Volume Three, "The King of Men", Ædwe walks South to the City of the King of Men, as a recruit to the army. After some training, he is involved in skirmishes, and advances his career. He meets a maiden in the forest, and instinctively feels an attraction to her, and later finds that she is well connected; an advantage, but also a pitfall. Eventually, he is forced to leave Albion, for the neighbouring Ælvish kingdom, where the Mountain King holds sway.

In Volume Four, "The Halls of the Mountain King", Ædwe carries messages from the King of Albion to the Ælvish Mountain King, and finds that he is expected. He forms an attachment to the King's daughter, whom he refers to as Sweordberan. While in the Halls, he comes of age, and comes into his own, receiving a sword and shield, both of ominous portent. He also finds the answer to a thing that has been puzzling him, since his time in Pandæmonium; the timing of eclipses.

Volume Five, "The Valley of the Shadow of Death", tells the tale of the first battle against Dunfiendsceatha in this series of volumes. Men and Ælves march into the Valley of the Shadow of Death, Deathsceadudene, knowing that it is a trap, but with the intention of defeating Dunfiendsceatha in the West of Middle Earth for a generation. Battle is joined, and the puca-swearm attack the column; the battle wavers, until an adversary arrives, testing the resolve of Men and Ælves. This volume has elements of horror; try reading it alone in a darkened room to see if your spine tingles.

Volume Six continues the theme of horror, in the aftermath of battle. Ædwe pursues an enemy, down into the depths of Pandæmonium, and enters The Abyss, where all mortal life ends; here he confronts his enemy. He then confronts the Guard in the very heart of Dunfiendsceatha's realm, and makes to escape unscathed, with certain spoils of war, whose significance is yet to emerge. By chance, as it seems, he encounters his boyhood friend Cenewine, and their fates become intertwined.
