Description
Calcutta was the pivot point for centuries of British domination - thus dominion - in Asia. Not just India. And one big reason for this was the justice delivery system. Which continues to this date.
Turner Morrison, Bennett and Coleman, Calcutta, the British Empire, transfer of power and intrigue over assets being grabbed therein too. And India's biggest media house as well as the Justice delivery system.
And a man named.
Nirmal Jit Singh Hoon
Born 1922/23 son of a sub-Inspector of police, grew up Amritsar+Lahore.
Late '30s, Hoon was influenced by his uncle Sardool Singh Kavisar, close associate of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Made trips to Calcutta and was arrested in 1939 for shouting slogans in Maidan, alonwith many other youngsters. Kavisar joined the Left Block, then Forward Block, and then INA with Bose.
Was released and sent back to Lahore, where Hoon joined Government College, whose British Principal was Netaji's friend from UK days. Hoon then helped in Netaji's transit through Lahore to Rawalpindi en route Kabul. Studied on to get MA.
In '47, fled Lahore when Hoon's cousins were killed, reached Delhi, then Dehradoon and finally penniless, reached Calcutta, where he worked first as a labourer at Howrah, then was turned down for many jobs including security guard at Turner Morrison, finally became tally clerk for scrpa merchants at Loha Hatti, Calcutta.
Learnt scrap trade, which after WW-II was huge and all shipped from Calcutta Port, caught the eye of an American buyer because Hoon could speak English and knew accounting and was honest, the American appointed him as his rep and gave Hoon a good salary and car and rented a home for him.
August '48 Hoon married Roma Mitra, daughter of a barrister and meanwhile started travelling Far East, Japan, USA, Canada in connection with business. Started representing a Japanese steel company also. Family moved to Japan for a while. During this period Hoon's sister-in-law went to RenkoJi with Netaji's niece but refused to accept the ashes as they were not convinced that the ashes were genuine.
In 1957, Roma Mitra moved from Japan to Calcutta and then to London, and started further studying Law. Hoon bought Morvi Palace, right next door to Windsor and kept doing better and better. Meanwhile, his family joined him and some relatives worked in Madras, Calcutta, Toronto, Vancouver BC, Seattle. Hoon also started getting to meet Indians travelling to London like film stars and politicians and looking after them.
In 1961-62-63, Hoon bought Turner Morrison with Mundhra, as the estate of the owners had put it up for sale. He sold the palace and made a good profit there, and chose to invest in Calcutta. Connected with his friends, Mundhra, Sahu Jain, Shanti Prasad Jain and others.
After that his troubles started in India. Briefly,Mundhra could not put up the money for his share of Turner Morrison becase of BIC/LIC scam, so Hoon bought him out, then there was trouble with Ashok Jain and Khaitans and after that the legal issues started. Asset stripping of Turner Morrison assets like Jessops, Angelo Brothers, and other companies made matters worse.
The story is now in Supreme Court for the last few decades, and next date is 20th January 2014. Hoon filed affidavits proving judicial corruption right to the top, Supreme Court issued suo moto contempt, Hoon refused to apologise and said he will prove truth, at the last hearing AG said Govt of India was inclined to withdraw the contempt notice, but Hoon said he was not going to withdraw and chooses to defend what he said.
Hoon's only mission is to try to restore Kolkata and India to its lost glory, as his tribute to Netaji.
And redeem his faith in the justice delivery system in India.
This is his story. No holds barred. As told to Veeresh Malik.
Truth IS stranger than fiction. And often more adventurous too.
Read it if you want to know more about what makes India tick.
