Claire is going through a midlife crisis which is augmented by the problems dealing with her mother of strong will and dubious mental equilibrium. She starts a torrid but hidden romance with Dan, where she discovers back her sensuality and questions her steady but not exciting life.
But Claire is having regrets of keeping this relationship hidden from Alex. Her cousin Lily turns into a good sounding board, and helps her get a conversation started with Alex. Lily went through a really bad divorce that was precipitated by the infidelity of her ex. With the benefit of hindsight she realizes that it was a mistake to put all they had in the line because of an outdated concept of sexual exclusivity.
Alex is also having an affair unbeknown to Claire. However his partner in crime decides to end it up and this throws him back into analyzing his life. He meets a caring soul online that acts like his guardian angel and helps him analyze the root issues in his relationship. He starts discussing with Claire how they should proceed to give their marriage a second chance.
However as it goes ideas are easier sketched than done, and opening up the conversation on their relationship proves to be a harder task that what he had imagined. Having an open relationship is a way they decide to explore together, and they decide to try polyamory
