Description

The universe of Chromosome Quest is our own, distorted ever so slightly by the magic mirror of imagination. There are heroes, villains and supporting characters, but the true star is the Portal, a speculative system of interplanetary, even inter-dimensional transportation.
The idea of the Portal is firmly entrenched in the Electric Universe Theory. The theory itself is well grounded in serious, peer-reviewed science. Some of the more extreme ideas floating around the topic definitely fall into fringe areas, tagged as 'Speculative Theories' by some. The story takes those 'Speculative Theories' a step – or a mile – further.
Told as a Quest, or Heroes Journey in the spirit of Joseph Campbell, Chromosome Quest introduces the mandatory characters, the Hero, the Mentor, the Goddess, plus assorted villains and the Object, or goal.
The hero is Fitz, with no last name. Fitz is a 'computer nerd' of uncommon character, a caricature of every 'Competent Man' meme in Science Fiction, essentially the kind of man every computer nerd believes himself to be.
The Mentor is a much older man known by the unique nickname of Petchy, or Petch. Despite balding pate, pot-belly, and obvious age, Petchy has an impressive physique, only slightly less-so than Fitz.
The Goddess, like Fitz, is a caricature of every Science Fiction Heroine of the Golden Age. Buxom with long crimson hair, athletic and intelligent, a female 'Competent Man'. She uses many names, but Fitz knows her as Teena, short for Athena.
These are the characters who embark on the quest to slay the Singularity. Before they can tackle the evil A.I. they must train for the battle in a safe place. The training site is a Stone-age world safe from detection by the A.I. due to being in a sort of alternate universe where the laws of physics differ.
The training planet is inhabited by nocturnal predators, meat-eating dinosaurs. The stone-age peoples hide in tremendous stone castles during the night-time, coming out only during the day to hunt and farm.
Training complete, the trio tackle the singularity, attempting to destroy the run-away globe girdling computer complex and retrieve the massive genetic database it houses.
Chromosome Quest is first tale in the adventure. It is followed by Chromosome Conspiracy which brings the action to Earth, as Fitz and two of the Stone-age planet's inhabitants must battle the Surveillance State and the Men in Black. The third tale, Chromosome Warrior will continue the story later this year.
