Most marriages in high society were arranged in order to benefit both families. No account was given to the 'victims' of this enforced togetherness.

The chosen were obliged to sacrifice themselves, giving up their dreams and desires, to satisfy the whims of their lineages. Taking into account the main element for this intimate joining (love) would be out of the question. This was not important or not accepted by many who never knew what love was.
