Do you often feel overwhelmed at work or school? Do you find yourself putting important tasks off until the last second? Would you be more successful if you stopped procrastinating?

Melanie Hutchinson’s book Procrastination: Rock the World Today suggests a new premise to the concept of procrastination: that it’s not Facebook’s fault, or the fault of the co-worker who likes to chat whenever she passes your cubicle, but yours. My specifically, it’s your brain’s fault, because it’s telling you that it’s overwhelmed with the work you’re doing (or supposed to be doing).

Hutchinson outlines the symptoms of procrastination in our everyday lives, like waiting until everything around us is “just right” to start on the project. She examines the myth that some of us like to repeat that we “work best under pressure”. She also addresses more passive-aggressive forms of procrastination, such as busywork. Hutchinson addresses so many forms of procrastination that everyone will find themselves among the pages of her first chapter.

Next, Procrastination addresses our work environments. Hutchinson advises that our environments be quiet and non-distracting. SHe also stresses the importance of organization, so we find the tools we need quickly in order to get back to work quickly. If your current office or cubicle is a mess, Hutchinson provides a detailed attack plan to get it organized and renewed.

Hutchinson then takes the reader to the concept of long-term goals, which is important for everyone. Long term goals help us to decide what is really important on a smaller, day-to-day basis. For example, if my long-term goal is to raise my child to love to read, then I will make it a priority to read with him each day, rather than to play video games every day.

Our long-term goals can be broken into shorter-term goals, to help us track our progress towards our long term-goals. For example, my long-term goal is to raise a child who enjoys reading, so a shorter term goal could be to have him complete the summer reading series at the local library this summer.Hutchinson couples the short-term goals with wisdom on rewards and attitude to round-out the picture.

Hutchinson then shows us how to break our short-term goal into actionable steps. If my short-term goal, for example, is my child participating in the summer reading program, then the actionable step can be 30 minutes of reading the books each day.

But Hutchinson isn’t without sympathy when it comes to distractions. She gives useful tips on managing common distractions like e-mail, instant messaging, phone calls/voicemails, the internet, co-workers, work environment and fatigue.= (kind of amazing that we get anything done, isn’t it?)

Procrastination also includes a chapter called “Bargaining With Ourselves” that is very helpful when we reach those tasks we’re just dreading. Sh’e clearly done her research when it comes to the psychology of rewards.
Hutchinson also includes some fascinating material on positive visualization, and how it can help with our motivation and self-discipline. It’s a method we don’t often hear discussed, and could be just what many are looking for.
