Description

A gemstones-smuggling cartel in Nigeria was suddenly linked to a group of Americans within the United States embassy in the country. Faced with exposure by a local employee of the embassy, murder became a necessity to contain the exposure.

The exposure was thought contained until a more frightening picture sprang to life in Washington D.C. weeks later. This time, the leak was within the smuggling outfit itself. The informant was Ikeh.

Ikeh was a greedy, resourceful, and determined smuggler, a core part of the daily operations of the smuggling cartel. He had always wanted more than salaries and commissions. Now, he felt he was aptly positioned to realize his dream. A number of factors combined to make his dream possible thus making him dangerous.

One. The masterminds of the smuggling operations were linked to US politicians who are as highly placed as the US Congress. A few others could be found scattered within the incumbent Federal Cabinet. Two. It was an election year. Three. The incumbent Federal Cabinet was still hotly embroiled in the ongoing scandals of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, leaving political casualties in its wake. Four. Though headquartered in Nigeria, the cartel has operations in many West African countries.

The details of the smuggling venture as well as the timing of the impending exposure meant that there was more at stake than just a few million dollars from West Africa. Top-notch Politicians and their political careers are threatened. And multiple diplomatic rows are imminent between Washington DC and the entire West African region.

Ikeh showing up on the political arena in Washington DC intent on selling his information to the highest bidder thus ignited a murderous race between rival politicians. The logic is simple. Were the information from Lagos to go public, some stood to recoup all they had lost to the ongoing scandals of the two wars in the Middle East. They could entirely reassemble their derailed political ambitions. On the other side of the political divide, many also stood to lose everything if the information went public. In other words, the total death of one political group is the complete resurrection of the rival camp, no in-between.

The availability of this felonious information from Nigeria promptly set alight a previously charged political terrain. Intrigues, deceits, and murders became norms.

And caught up in the mess are Ikeh's two housemates in the United States. They are Nigerian immigrants in the U.S. striving to earn a living, having just escaped Africa's quicksand of poverty like hundreds of thousands before them.

"CHOKE - The Wide Road" is the first of two volumes of the CHOKE series. The concluding volume is "CHOKE 2 - The Narrow Road". COMING SOON!!
Both books expose in details the aspect of oil-politics' power-play that we, ordinary people on the street, are never privileged to know, and thus never think about as we consume, daily, the refined products of Crude Oil and Natural Gas from these swampland.
