Description

The Great Story of Endurance is a true-life story of a decent lad, Thuto, who was born at the village of Phaphama, in a small nation called "The Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho." Thuto is a Sesotho name, which literally means education. He came in this world in the early 1980s. As he grew up, he had only one dream. And that was, to be educated. Nevertheless, prior to the attainment of his long-term goal, he had to endure and overcome a number of challenges – in the village, in various schools and in tertiary institutions.

Thuto would occasionally sneak out and elude from his strict parents’ sight to do loads of mischievous deeds. When he sold two ducklings of their neighbour to a traditional herbalist, and when he chased one village girl until she lost her father’s coins on her way to buy some cigarettes, he could not escape his mother’s punishments.

Three tragedies struck in his life. He accidentally lost one of his milk teeth, while tossing stones with his friend over a heap of rough sand. As he and his brother, Keletso, were busy harvesting potatoes in the plots, he chopped Keletso with a spade on the heel unaware. Again, when Thuto and his younger brother, Tsietsi, were attacked by a swarm of killer bees, they nearly faced death.

When Thuto became a learner for the first time in primary level, it was a dream that came true. He wanted to emulate his brother, Keletso, who was always relating to him tales he learned from school; games he played and movies he watched at school. He witnessed when older learners attacked young learners, who retaliated by chasing and pinching perpetrators. As a result, young learners were forced to drop out from school while others bunked classes. But despite all of the bullying actions, Thuto held his head high to acquire quality education.

In his first day at Catholic High School, he was overwhelmed with a lot of jubilation. However, his joy turned into a disaster a few days later, when his class teacher expelled him from the class. Again, he was kicked on the stomach by one student at the football pitch and he thought that he had made a wrong decision to pursue his studies there. As he met his first crush, Sebabatso, it seemed as if love had found him, only for his emotions and expectations to be left high. Two odd incidents happened. His teachers and fellow students were involved in a widespread picketing, which left many students ignorant while many failed their Junior Certificate examinations.

Thuto and his gang never anticipated that their motto would influence badly on their studies, which left many of them stranded after failing to pass their Cambridge Oversees School Certificate well. Thuto had to spend six years idling home without a school. And that was the beginning of his struggle in life. He had to perform various tough activities in order to penetrate through the barriers which hindered him from being admitted to various institutes of higher learning.

While at tertiary level, problems and challenges never stopped to ensue. He had to do everything in his power to make sure that he completed his studies. And by the grace of God and his amazing power of endurance, Thuto accomplished his mission. But, a thought that the university would not realize his certificate had never ceased to haunt him for many years.
