ONE NIGHT AGAINST THE GLASS (BILLIONAIRE ROMANCE) EXCERPT
The club lights pulse to the thumping base.
Some popular radio song remixed to a faster dance beat comes over the speakers.
The crowd cheers enthusiastically as I sit back and groan in the VIP section on the balcony.
Same music, same crowd.
I shake my head at my boys sitting across from me in the two chairs surrounding the low table with our drinks.
Sam turns to me. “Fool don’t do me like that. Lookin’ all disappointed.â€
He looks over at Rob and then back at me, “Shakin’ your head. It was your idea to come here.â€
Rob nods, “Yeah, Jake. Dude you’re a billionaire. I told you we should put those billions to work. Take the plane and get the hell out of the city.â€
“But your lazy ass wanted to come to this club. Again,†Sam finishes Rob’s thought.
My two friends nod in unison. Looking at me like I’d ruined their night.
I wasn’t lazy.
I was bored.
And hell maybe a little lazy too.
Manhattan was filled with gorgeous women.
But they were all the same.
All trying to land the billionaire playboy.
All incapable of seeing past the money.
Not that I had cared.
Until the hot one night stands all started to blend into each other. An endless monotony of the same.
It was almost as monotonous as being in a committed relationship.
Not that I would know.
“Yeah, alright. Stop busting my balls or I won’t hook you up with that model, Tatiana,†I tell Sam.
“Whatever man,†Sam waves a hand, “there are plenty of honies up in here who’d want a piece of this.â€
I slide down in the plush chair until my neck rests on the top.
“You know what your problem is?†Rob throws at me.
I stare at the ceiling and watch the blue and green lights bounce off the white walls.
“What?†I don’t even care what he’s going to say.
“You’re too smart for your own good. You want everything to be interesting. Be a puzzle,†Rob answers.
And then Sam chimes in, “Seriously, man. Why can’t you just sit back and enjoy the perks of being you? So what if New York isn’t filled with a bunch of interesting girls—they’re hot. Just enjoy it.â€
I don’t say anything.
The guys say something to each other. Let out some exasperated sound and then get up.
Leaving me to be bored by myself.
They were sick of me.
I was OK with that. I was kind of sick of me.
The music changes.
Half way through the song, the crowd starts to get louder. Like they’re egging someone on.
With nothing else to do, I pick up my scotch from the table and walk over to the edge of the balcony.
Resting my elbows on the railing, I lean over to watch some chick dancing by herself.
A space has cleared around her, giving her room.
She’s wearing a black fedora and a short trench coat that fits tight on her banging body.
I check out her legs, it doesn’t look like she’s wearing anything else besides the trench. It only covers a couple inches of her thighs.
She’s moving all sexy like. But not stripper sexy. Pro dancer sexy.
I can see her rack from where I’m standing.
Nice.
Her hair is tucked into the hat. Her face is covered too.
My mind finally shifts from how bored I am, to a visual of taking this chick back to the penthouse.
And taking her against my glass wall.
The apartment dark.
Night views of the City behind her as she screams out my name.
Until one night Jess walks in. She’s anything but ordinary, but Jake won’t find out just who she is until the lights come on. They share one hot night together that will leave Jake wanting more, but she might just be the one girl he can’t have.
