Nodal Analysis & Sparsity (Applied Mathematics in Engineering Book 1)

This book offers a concise treatment of one of the most fundamental concepts that underpins the area of electrical power systems analysis, namely, Nodal Analysis. The numerical solution of practical power circuits requires the use of sparsity techniques, owing to their rather large-scale nature, and the concepts of nodal analysis and sparsity go hand-in-hand in modern electrical power systems. The material of the book is a distillation of a four-hour lecture that the author delivered for a twenty year period to the senior undergraduate class pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. More recently, the lecture material has been modified to suit the needs of the new entrants to the International MSc course in Smart Grids, offered by the Tampere University of Technology, Finland. The material is delivered during the fourth week of the course Fundamentals of Electrical and Power Engineering, spanning five hours of lectures. It comprises theory, numerical examples and software code written in Matlab®. The material on sparse matrices is a further addition to the book and it is aimed at the seasoned researcher engaged in the development of efficient algorithms involving nodal analysis of large-scale power circuits.
The recommended, pre-requisite knowledge to study this book is basic electric circuit theory, complex number algebra, matrix theory and entry-level programming. The material contained in this book should enable the reader to progress steadily through basic to advanced concepts on electrical power systems, such as power flows, constrained economic dispatch, state estimation, fault current analysis, transient stability analysis and network security assessment.
