He discovers how to build a human machine using his DNA and a certain crystal that possesses unique properties. Six imaginary character reside inside Locke's mechanical typewriter and they have regular discussions with Locke; they may or may not be friendly. A character named Zor may have designs on the nobleman Locke; she has an extraordinary power of illusion. While in the process of building his machine, Locke meets a strange woman named Karlota at the supermarket who later reveals she is a CIA operative on a mission that may be out of this world. Locke immediately falls in love Karlota. After Locke creates his machine, Zor persuades Locke to build a female machine. Realities ricochet to all corners of Locke's mind.
