All Lannetay wants to do is pick up her cargo from the planet Wrantiban and fly off to sell it. But a customs agent delays her while looking for a bribe – or an assignation – and Lannetay is forced to call the planet’s trade minister to get the man to do his job. She’s not about to bribe, and while still mourning her late husband she’s not about to entertain thoughts of a tryst.
While exiting the system, arriving military spacecraft force Lannetay to continually adjust course, further complicating her departure. Just as she’s free of that sector of space, Wrantiban calls to demand she return to the planet. They send warships to “convince†her, but she deftly avoids those entanglements
Finally free of Wrantiban and their space navy, Lannetay encounters a cruise liner being attacked between the stars. After the attackers leave, there’s only one lifepod left with signs of life.
