During their brief marriage, the company they head increases its revenues despite the vicissitudes of the Great Depression and prepares to begin operations in Brazil—in no small part because of the tightening control the Pembertons, eponymous Serena in particular, exercise over the company and the surrounding communities. Only two ultimately escape that control, fleeing across the country to evade the enforcement of Serena’s will—a will that ultimately claims a husband seemingly devoted to her along with wide swaths of once-pristine old-growth forest.
