This is a two volume book. In the first volume we are introduced to Kyra who is a research scientist working in a large university under a government grant in the area of molecular consolidation, or the shrinking of living organisms by consolidating their molecular structure.
When the first device successfully shrunk a lab rodent, Kyra went on to build a portable prototype that she could use off the university campus.
On her way home the first night with the device on the front seat of her car, she had to pass through the bowery section of the city where she noticed a disheveled vagrant sitting in an alleyway and fondling a nearly empty bottle of wine.
After a brief deliberation she decided that this unfortunate man would be much better off if he were to be in her personal care, so she proceeded to zap her first human guinea pig. The man was immediately reduced in size to a height just below the level of Kyra's knees.
At home the only clothes that she could find that would fit her newly miniaturized guest were some old doll clothes that Kyra had saved from her childhood. She was totally enchanted with "Pooky", as she named him, so much so that her focus was shifting from the scientific goals of the university to the amusement of having a captive little man for her personal entertainment.
In the second volume Kyra begins a systematic search for other isolated and vulnerable males whom she can add to her lair. But she finds that she is not alone in her peculiar ambition. Andrea is a social service investigator who discovers Kyra's little "hobby" and she becomes charmed with the idea of shrinking a man down to manageable proportions, but for a different reason. Andrea's husband has been out of work for over a year and instead of going to job interviews as he claimed he was doing, he had been frequenting local taverns and playing cards with his buddies. If Andrea could shrink him down to a knee-high stature then she could exercise complete dominion over him and perhaps change his irresponsible ways.
