About the Author



Stephen Westwood is a highly experienced businessman, who has achieved successes based on the financial and commercial techniques and disciplines outlined in this book.

Following a law degree, he then qualified and practised as a professional accountant with one of the major international accounting firms.

He then moved to an engineering company, part of a larger private group in this market, becoming Financial Director. He was a member of a team which delivered 10 years of sustained organic growth in its international markets of aerospace and orthopaedics. The company also floated on the Stock Exchange during that time, a process in which he played a key role. Subsequently, it diversified and bought businesses in the IT sector, which it sold for substantial cash sums. The company was then sold to another public company, realising a doubling of value for the public investors within 5 years. He was a major player in those sales.

At that point, he set up his own business, focussed on the creation and delivery of value for shareholders, using this experience as the template for the delivery of successful outcomes.

Key achievements have included :


  • Restructure of an IT group through rationalisation and the sale of non-core activities, prior to a trade sale

  • Restructure of the field-based debt recovery operation of a major utility business to reduce headcount, unit costs of the activity and to increase cash recovery

  • Reshaping of the commercial focus of the customer service operation of a major utility business to enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty

  • Commercialisation of the activity of a university spin-out in the medical devices sector, which included :
    • raising funds through an IPO and post IPO funding rounds

    • securing a collaboration and commercialisation agreement with the leading global player in the market for its initial device

    • delivery of external quality systems accreditations


  • Sale of the business of a university spin-out in the veterinary science sector to a public company
