On May 1, 1959 the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors made the harsh decision to close its schools to all students. The schools remained closed between 1959 through 1964. Prince Edward County was the only school district in the United States of America to chain its school doors for five consecutive years.

For five years Prince Edward County, Virginia closed its schools. Students from grades kindergarten through 12th grade felt the effect.
