SYNOPSIS
In this coming of age story with many lessons to be learned, Zoë “Simone” Masequai was born in West Africa, but does not remember anything about her homeland because she came to America at a young age. Zoë arrived in the States with her mother and younger brother. Her father, who later abandons the family, brought the three of them to West Philadelphia. The only cultural link she has to her roots is her mother and extended family. She deals with the scrutiny of fellow Liberians that say she is trying to be too much like Americans and she lacks the true meaning of her African culture. She is a young woman that is trying to find herself. She is dealing with feeling neglected and looking for love in men that she did not get for her father that leads her on a rocky roller coaster of emotional trials and eating disorder. Confused about letting her father back into her life causes even more stress. Her weight issue is also a constant reminder of feelings of unworthiness. She goes away to college to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore vowing to be popular and find love. Zoë tired of being unpopular and overlooked leaves for college life in Maryland. She does not know what life in Maryland has in store for her.
She begins to get attention from Calvin, an ex boyfriend of her new friend Aisha whose coat tails she ride into a new world of popularity.
