Description

I lead her into my chambers, assuming that whatever she has planned wouldn’t require the sort of equipment I keep in other parts of the house. In any case, if she is disappointed in anything I might show her, I believe that I would be able to tell immediately and rectify it if need be. She steps gingerly into my rooms, peering around curiously at the black-lacquered wardrobe and the vibrant satin bedding, rich with color as I prefer it to be.
“Take a seat if you’d like,” I suggest, waving my hand in a wide arc. She has a couple of options at her disposal. The bed, a plush chair, the tall footstool that accompanies it if she so chooses. It takes her a long moment to parse my words, as though she is hearing them through cotton wool. Then she shakes her head and smiles uncertainly, moving almost silently to the bed. “You must think me foolish,” she says, laughing lightly as she brushes her fingers through her hair.
“I think you’re exploring something new,” I respond, rifling through the chest I keep at the end of the bed. I note, but do not mention, that I can see her leaning toward me as though to sneak a peak at what I might remove from inside. “Anyone would be nervous.”

Ever since their encounter at the queen’s residence, Onna has been anxious about her relationship with the princess, Mailynn. No good, she thinks, will come of it, but the truth and her desires conflict and when it comes down to it, she can’t give up Mailynn, who has returned to her with another new pursuit that would put the love-struck Onna into cuffs. And Onna, much to her own regret, would not have it any other way, though the consequences may be severe.
